New Journals 2013 : Set 4 : Faux Leather

This set of new journals showcases some of the faux leather journals.
The surface design technique textures paper to look like weathered leather.

New Journals : Set 3 : Commercial Fabric

This set of journals is made from commercially available fabrics.
In most cases, I like to include an interesting closure.
These are what I consider the "budget" priced of my hand-made journals.

All my Sweet Leaf Notebooks have 3 signatures (60 pages) of antique-laid paper--really nice stationary that makes you want to run your hand over it and write or draw on it with a nice writing implement.  It's all about the feel of it!

New Journals 2013 : Set 2 : Silk, Batiks, and Hand-Dyed Journals

Here's the second set of new journals for 2013.
These journal covers are made from silk, batik, and hand-dyed fabric.

 Rust-dyed Journal (108)
Yes, I actually dyed this fabric with rust.
The addition of tannin created the iron gray color in addition to the usual rust.

Detail of shell closure.

Batik Journal with Silver Button  (114)

Detail of the silver button closure.

Blue and Plum Snow-Dyed Journal (109)
This journal is actually bluer in real life.

Blue and Brown Dyed Journal (103)
This fabric is textured with salt to make interesting designs.

Kind of looks like the moon!

New Journals 2013 : Set 1 : Mixed Media and Composed Fabric

I've been busy making new one-of-a-kind journals for the craft sale in early December.

"Under the Sea" Journal (101)
This is one of my favorites from the new set.
This one gave me a chance to try a few new techniques with mixed media collage. On a background of black felt, I spread some previously dyed gauze along with some scraps from a quilting project.
I love the way the colors POP on the black background.
It made me think of coral reefs and tropical climes.
The starfish button is from my friend, J.

Here's a shot of the entire journal cover spread out.

Detail of the coral-dyed cheesecloth.

The Huntsman Journal (100)

Here you can see the entire journal cover spread out.
On a background of black felt, I combined scraps of green velvet, unfurled ribbons with a nice sparkle, and green feathers.  Something about this journal reminds me of Robin Hood or The Huntsman (from Snow White).

Detail of the button closure.

 Red Spice Journal (105)

Composed Fabric, made of recycled quilt scraps,
covered with a silk sheer and stitched into a new fabric.

Lady of the Lake Journal (106)
Composed Fabric, made of recycled quilt scraps,
covered with a silk sheer and stitched into a new fabric.
The blue and red plaid make me think of a summer time picnic at the Lake (any lake).

Detail of the button closure.
You can also see some of the recycled threads trapped into the composed fabric.

Circus Journal (107)
Composed Fabric, made of recycled quilt scraps,
covered with a silk sheer and stitched into a new fabric.

 Hearts - Quarter-size Journal (98)
Composed Fabric, made of recycled quilt scraps, paper, threads, and other bits
covered with a  tulle and stitched into a new fabric.

More to come ...
