Lovely Silk

Silk

This lovely pack of SILK was on the FREE table at Quilt Guild last night!  I could not believe my luck!

The sari silk I bought a few years ago is too thin to sew into a quilt, but this will work nicely!   Most of this is sturdier, but I may still need to stabilize some of it ...

I was thinking of making a crazy quilt, using the AccuCut Die, but now I'm thinking a different pattern might work better -- more like the Kantha quilts?  Or maybe a rail fence?  We'll see ...

What about this 2-4-6 pattern would work well with this silk?

Or maybe something like this stacked coins quilt?

Ohhh, silk is my absolute downfall. Besides actual pieces/yardage of silk, I have bought over a 100 silk ties at charity shops over the years. I now literally can't go into the Goodwill or Pet Rescue thrift shop anymore because I simply cannot keep myself from checking out the ties, knowing I will add more to my stash which I obviously don't need. Most of that silk is fairly thin and unstable for cutting and piecing so I've always backed it with a fusible knit stabilizer like is used in clothing. Works really well to bring the fabric up to the same thickness as most quilting cottons if you decide to mix (I've mixed mine with handdyes for instance) and no worries about stretching out of shape, so much easier to handle. As for patterns, you've got some good ideas there. I was very surprised to see that a friend had taken a friend of hers ties and made it into a queen size quilt using the Chinese coins pattern - it was gorgeous and really used up those ties! I may have to do that myself. Good luck settling on a use for these beauties. If I didn't already have so much in my own stash, I might be envious - lol.

I didn't know you had such affection for silk!
I am going out this am to get some "light" stabilizer so I can work with it easier. You recommend a fusible knit stabilizer? I am also glad that you said it was ok to mix it with other quilting materials. I don't have enough of any of the silks to act as a background fabric, or sashing, or anything like that. So it is a huge relief to know that it won;t go wonky if I use some regular quilting fabric, too! Whew!

I don't see silk ties in the thrift store around here these days. It's just crappy polyester and other ick fabrics. Another reason to jump for joy at finding this well-matched stash!

It's supposed to be relatively cool here this week yet, so I'll be able to use the iron without myself getting too hot in my sewing room. This is the time to make preparations!

I've e-mailed to you directly more info - especially on the interfacing.
