Sweet Little Pumpkin #2

This is the second sweet little pumpkin I made at Quilt Camp last weekend.

THe body of the pumpkin is made entirely from scraps.  I know most of the oranges were left over from this quilt and this one.

The homespun borders came from a kit my mom had.  The homespun looks a little wonky, so I think I'll secure it a little more with some simple quilting in the borders.

Here's a detail shot of the stitching and the trapunto effect that makes the pumpkin pop up from the background.  There's an extra layer of batting underneath the pumpkin that makes it work.

This is the pattern -- Just giving credit where it's due.

Gifted to Lori Jage to celebrate a tremendous breakthrough in her life.

Sweet Little Pumpkin #1

At Quilt Camp this past weekend, I made this sweet little pumpkin, using a pattern and some leafy fabrics from my mom's stash, and some orange scraps from my own stash.   I can even tell you that some of the oranges came from this quilt and this one.

I added an extra layer of batting underneath the applique to help it pop up out of the background.  Adding an echo stitch about 1/4 inch away from it also helps make it pop up.

Here is a detail shot of the leaves.

I took the time to secure the edges of the appliques with a satin stitch, just to get the practice, and prove I can still do it. ;-)

Detail of the vine and pumpkin slices.  The center bit is set up kind of like a crazy quilt block.

If you think it looks familiar, it is ...  My mom used this pattern and made her own version, which I previously posted here on Sweet Leaf Notebook.   The binding fabric was tucked in with the pattern.   If you look closely, you'll see it's the same on both mine and my mom's pumpkin. How's that for continuity?  ;-)

This is the pattern, in case you want to look it up yourself.

Holly's Pumpkin Quiltie and Fall Leaves

Holly's Pumpkin

I am continuing to showcase some of my mom's quilts here.  I am not sure if she made these [I think she did ...] or if these were shop samples, or if someone gave them to her.  There are no labels on them.        I think she made these.

Here's a detail shot of Holly's Pumpkin, showing the stitching around some of the elements.

Fall Leaves on Blue
Here's the one I hung up for my Dad this month.

Here's a detail shot.  She must have been just starting with the thread painting.

I love that batik background.  It looks like a huge tree trunk. It's an amazing batik!
