Collectible Cathedral Windows in Reds and Purples

 

Vintage (or is it antique?) Cathedral Windows in Reds and Purples. 

This is another Cathedral Windows Quilt that I purchased on FB Marketplace.  I know how much work these are, so I appreciate that someone did this all by hand BEFORE me.  I am not willing or able to make something like this in this size; hence, that is the reason for purchasing it as a collectible quilt.  I will give it a good and appreciative home!

It comes from a seller in Southern California.  I love the combination of reds and purples.  60 x 75 inches.

It is bigger than I thought it would be!  It almost covers our double bed.  I was thinking it would be a wall hanging.  The seller said that it needed to be finished off ...  There is 1 corner that was not finished.  One row of blocks is pinned and ready to be hand-sewn onto the rest of the quilt, but that would leave a row of "empty" windows in between ...  

There is one more shorter row of blocks, but I'm not sure where it goes.  No other fabric to finish it off -- and I'll never find matching colors or fabrics.

 

Yes-- it came with the pins in that last corner. 

I'll have to consult with the Ladies at Quilt Guild (Laura R. and Pat Saft) about what to do with this unfinished beauty.  Maybe sew on the last row and leave the missing corner open?  It could hang that way ...  We'll see.  It's very heavy, and very well done -- as far as the maker got with it.

The edges have these sort of prairie points. 

If you added another block, it would be filled in with a window.

Vintage Quilts: 1960s Cathedral Windows

Collectible Cathedral Windows Quilt

I got this one on ebay as well.  It was listed as a table cloth -- though, I would never want to use this on the table!  I'm going to hang it on the wall ...  It's 30 x 40 inches, so not big enough for a bed.  It just makes me happy to look at it!

Unlike the vintage Wedding Ring Quilt I purchased this week, I believe this one really is from the 1960s, and it is old enough to be called antique.  The fabrics are thick and sturdy -- similar to a quilt that my Aunt made from about that time.

No batting, as is traditional for this type of quilt.  The background fabric gets folded and layered multiple times, adding to the weight of these quilts.  Look at all those fine little stitches!

The stitching is very well done -- Much better than I do with hand-stitching!

It does not have a label, but I see a couple  of these horse patches that say, "Remember me when you see this."  Who was this nameless woman?

 My Own Cathedral Windows Quiltlet

Several years ago, I worked up a mini-Cathedral Windows Quiltet.  It was the handwork I would take along to France for several trips.  I tried to work up 1 window each day on those trips.  My handwork has never been great, although it did improve with that project.  All the colored squares were scraps, leftover from other projects -- If I think about it, I can even tell you all the other projects those particular fabrics appeared in.  ;-)   The point is: I know what it takes to make something like this, and I have tremendous respect for the maker, and I'm willing to pay $112 to own this larger example at the top of this post.

Yes, I'm officially a collector now!

Cathedral Windows

Several years ago, I started this handwork project for when we take overseas trips and I am without my beloved sewing machines (I can honestly tell you that's a hardship for me!) I finished it early on this trip to France. The goal has been 1 window a day while we are away from home. The colored bits are made entirely from scraps in my stash. I'm not much for handwork, but my skills did improve as this project progressed.

This is the handwork project I took to France in April. I tried to do 1 window a day (I'm not much for handwork, but I couldn't take my sewing machine along ...) I'm a little over 1/2 done with it. It might have to wait for another trip to be finished ... This is just a small table-topper made from scraps of other projects.

I was inspired by Vicky W.'s gorgeous Cathedral Windows bed cover.
